D.C.’s mayor wants to change how the city detains people suspected of violent crime. During a crime summit, the mayor took questions about her plans to introduce legislation to make it easier to hold people in jail before trial.Mayor Muriel Bowser is ready to shift the city’s previous stance on whether repeat offenders charged with a violent crime should remain in jail until their trial.“What I will recommend is that we change the presumption, especially in cases of violent crime, where someone has already been convicted of a violent crime,” Bowser said during a crime summit on Wednesday. “We think that the court should have in their decision-making the ability to detain that person until the trial happens. So that will be one part and a big part of the legislation that I advance to the council to help deal with what I think are some gaps in our law.”She plans to propose the legislation to the D.C. Council before heading to Capitol Hill, where she...

By: Minu Mathew and Taylor Pace, Local Journalism Initiative ReporterWhen Shruti Nadkarni arrived from India to pursue her PhD at the University of Guelph, she spent her first month here living off a diet primarily made up of bread and mayonnaise, losing a dangerous amount of weight in the process. As a graduate student, she came with funding in her pocket. But as an international student, she wasn’t familiar with the local cuisine, and was shocked by how expensive it was. “In my country, you can get vegetables anywhere. By: Terry Eddy, University of Windsor ListenAs the Toronto Maple Leafs recently limped to a third straight defeat to the Florida Panthers, Leafs fans experienced the dreaded rat trick. In this ritual, Panthers fans throw plastic rats onto the ice to summon the energy of past, unexpected successes.A group of extraterrestrials watching this event might be puzzled to see hundreds of otherwise normal people hurling mass-produced rodents at a few dozen tired men with unkempt facial hair. If, as sport fans, we set our past experiences to the side, these superstitions that are so pervasive in sport — especially when the games carry the most weight — really make very little objective sense. https://www.youtube.com/embed/jnPZX0U9-XI?wmode=transparent&start=0 TSN looks at the history of the ‘rat trick,’ when Florida Panthers fans throw plastic rats onto the ice after games. As an ardent sport fan for most of my life — and someone who may or may not have participated in fan rituals — I’m in...
