Casa Bonita employees demand answers, start petition

DENVER (KDVR) -- Casa Bonita employees submitted a list of demands to management last week and started a petition citing why they are unhappy with their current situation at the iconic restaurant. The list came from 50 employees asking management "to revert to what was originally promised by ownership when they were hired months ago." Defining their exact hours of operation and giving them a set fully operational opening date is another concern the workers brought to the table. How does Casa Bonita’s wait staff pay stack up to other Colorado jobs? In addition to Casa Bonita's undefined hours and days of operation, the group demanded access to health benefits. It also wants "the ability to consider employment documents for a reasonable timeframe before signing; and to reinstate former employees lost through Casa Bonita’s contract-related disputes."In a press release, the group known as #WeAreTeamCasa, said it drafted the demand letter to management with the assistance of Restaura...

Electric scooters blocking sidewalk access to disabled residents

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 03:07:53 GMT

DENVER (KDVR) -- Denver's Department of Transportation and Infrastructure is cracking down on parked scooters on sidewalks in the city. Some Denver residents are not able to make it around town simply because of how someone parked their electric scooter. Tom Miller and many other disabled Denver residents are asking people to be more cautious. Getting a ride in an accessible van is difficult, so the majority of the time Miller is using his power chair to get around, and those scooters being parked on the sidewalk have not made that easy. He’s been in a wheelchair and power scooter for quite some time after an infection in his left leg led to an amputation. Now, getting to the clinic that's making his prosthetic is difficult. Scooters parked along his path essentially block his way -- some in the middle of the sidewalk and others leading up to ramps. "I’d like to go through life in Denver without running into obstacles every time I want to go out," Miller said. "I thought, 'why do I ...

They fled Syria’s shattering civil war. Now, Syrian refugees in Jordan fear being forced to return

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) — As Jordan hosted regional talks this spring aimed at ending Syria’s isolation after more than a decade of civil war, Syrian refugee Suzanne Dabdoob felt a deep pressure in her brain and in her ears, she said, a fear she hadn’t felt since arriving to Jordan 10 years ago.Ahead of the meeting, Syrian President Bashar Assad agreed that 1,000 Syrian refugees living in Jordan would be allowed to safely return home — a test case for the repatriation of far greater numbers. Jordan’s top diplomat spoke only of voluntary returns. But panic spread through working-class east Amman, where Dabdoob and many other Syrians have built new lives in multistory, cement-block buildings. “I would rather die right here than go back to Syria,” said Dabdoob, 37, whose home was razed by airstrikes in the Syrian city of Homs. She fled to Amman with her five children, her accountant husband, who dodged military service, and her sister, who she said is wanted for abandoning her civil service...
