The Senate on Thursday night capped four months of contentious debate and voted to send a compromise bill to President Biden’s desk that extends the government’s borrowing authority until January of 2025 and staves off a potential default next week. A large bipartisan majority of the Senate voted 63-36 to approve the bill, which passed the House on Wednesday night. The approval came after the Senate clinched an agreement to conduct a series of amendment votes on Thursday night and move directly to final passage. The normally slow-moving chamber raced through a dozen votes in just over three hours.“By passing this bill we will avoid default tonight. America can breathe a sigh of relief,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) declared on the Senate floor. “From the start, avoiding default has been our north star. The consequences of default would be catastrophic,” he said. “For all the ups and downs and twists and turns it took to get here, it is so good for th...Police kill 1 in group of young armed robbery suspects

LONDON — The U.K. Labour Party has been plunged into a reckoning over internal processes after a series of sexual misconduct allegations against senior figures. The revelation of sexual harassment allegations against the long-serving MP Geraint Davies, which resulted in his suspension Thursday, prompted dismay and recriminations across the party. The Labour MP Rosie Duffield wrote in a WhatsApp chat with other Labour women that she was “bloody sick” of scandals affecting the party, saying: “We have to wait for young women staffers to report and make official complaints before any action is ever taken.”Her colleague Charlotte Nichols said she was given a list of “about 30 names” of men to stay clear of when she first entered parliament at the 2019 general election. The Winter Hill Community Innovation School in Somerville will be closed Friday after a small section of concrete fell into a stairwell inside the building, school and city officials said. Officials said the concrete fell outside school operating hours, while the school was unoccupied. The stairwell was later closed to students and staff while a structural engineer was brought in and while city Department of Public Works staff responded, according to officials. Officials said DPW crews had “conducted minor repairs” and had been monitoring the building’s interior as of Thursday night. The planned closure on Friday now comes “out of an abundance of caution,” according to officials, to let engineers “conduct a more thorough review of the building.”In a message signed by Somerville’s Interim Superintendent of Schools Jeff Curley, Mayor Katjana Ballantyne and school principal Courtney Gosselin, officials said they are working on a plan to temporarily relocate classroo...Latest news
