UC schools admit record number of California applicants; Latino students lead the pack

The University of California system announced Tuesday that it had admitted a record number of California applicants for the upcoming fall 2023 semester, with Latinos students leading the pack.About 37.6% of students admitted to UC colleges this year are Latino, a slight increase from last year, when 37.3% of first-year students were Latino. Latino students were once again the largest ethnic group among incoming California freshmen, according to the report. A shooting in Pasadena left a woman dead Tuesday morning.A fight at about 1:11 a.m., and when officers arrived at the 2000 block of North Fair Oaks Avenue, they found a woman in her 30s suffering from a gunshot wound, according to the Pasadena Police Department.The melee had gotten physical before the fatal shot was fired, according to Lt. Cuellar.The woman was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, and she later died there. Southbound Caltrain No. 116 struck the person at 12:30 p.m. near Whipple Avenue. (KRON) -- A man was arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a 10-year-old child early Tuesday morning, according to the Napa County Sheriff's Office. Home Depot guard shoots suspected shoplifter in San Carlos Antonio Botella Verdin, 66, was arrested on suspicion of sexual intercourse or sodomy of a child age 10 or younger and oral copulation or sexual penetration of a child 10 years or younger. Verdin was booked into jail, and he is being held without bail. (BCN) -- Eight Bay Wheels bike share stations are now available for use in Golden Gate Park ahead of the Outside Lands music festival this weekend, San Francisco City Hall announced Monday. Bay Wheels opened four Classic Docked and four Virtual Corral bike share stations at key locations around the park on Monday, while another four stations will become available in the coming weeks, city officials said. Altogether, the five classic bike share stations and seven virtual stations stretch from east of the Conservatory of Flowers to the westernmost edge of the park near Ocean Beach. Their installation is expected to further ease congestion and create new biking capacity in Golden Gate Park, according to City Hall.
