President Joe Biden opened his visit to Israel on Wednesday vowing to show the world that the U.S. stands in solidarity with the Jewish people and offering an assessment that the deadly explosion at a Gaza Strip hospital appeared to have been carried out “by the other team” and not the Israeli military.“Based on what I’ve seen, it appears as though it was done by the other team, not you,” Biden told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a meeting, referring to Hamas militants. But Biden said there were “a lot of people out there” who weren't sure what caused the blast. The Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry said an Israeli airstrike caused the destruction and hundreds of deaths. The Israeli military denied involvement and blamed a misfired rocket from the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, another militant group. However, that organization also rejected responsibility. MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A former Wisconsin Supreme Court justice is fighting a subpoena ordering her to appear in court in a lawsuit related to advice she gave about possible impeachment of a current liberal justice, calling it “unreasonable and oppressive.”Republican lawmakers have threatened possible impeachment of current Justice Janet Protasiewicz related to comments she made during the campaign calling GOP-drawn legislative maps “rigged” and “unfair.” She joined with the liberal majority of the court in agreeing to hear a lawsuit supported by Democrats that seeks to overturn the GOP maps and enact new ones.Wisconsin Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Vos asked three former conservative Supreme Court justices for advice on impeachment. Two of the three told him that impeaching Protasiewicz was not warranted. Rivalry games, travel demands are top concerns as ACC officials plan to tackle new scheduling format

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 06:50:47 GMT

Atlantic Coast Conference officials are headed to North Carolina this week for their fall meetings. Perhaps Dallas or one of two California spots — Stanford or Berkeley — would have been a more appropriate location as a new scheduling format is discussed to accommodate the league’s expansion.Travel to those locations would have given athletic directors and administrators a preview of what they will be asking of their teams and fans when SMU, Stanford and Cal join the league in 2024.League officials are expected to discuss a new scheduling format for next year’s debut of the 17-team football conference. North Carolina coach Mack Brown and others are concerned about possibly losing rivalry games — a concern that other leagues, like the Big Ten, are also grappling with among all the changes.“With all this realignment going on, it’s kind of crazy,” Brown said Monday. “I’m a traditionalist and I love rivalries. I think championships and rivalries are the two things that this ...

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Two employees at a Kansas prison were fired, and six others were disciplined, after accusations that they mocked and failed to help an injured female inmate.Other inmates at the Topeka Correctional Facility said the injured inmate spent two hours crawling back to her cell after hurting herself in September, KCUR-FM reported. Inmates told KCUR that prison staff called the injured woman “fat” and “lazy,” and didn’t provide assistance because they thought she was faking.Hours later, the inmate was hospitalized with an injured foot, and didn’t return to the prison for several weeks, the Kansas news service reported.Kansas Department of Corrections spokesperson David Thompson said in a statement that officials take allegations of mistreatment seriously.“We are confident that these actions represent a temporary lapse in judgment for the handful of staff that were involved and do not reflect a systemic issue at TCF or the larger correctional system,” Thompso...
